Fly Tying

Chatting with a colleague on Friday, she happened to mention that she has a friend is a 3-time world champion fly tyer. Jack is a serious fly fisherman, so I asked if we could meet this fellow, and tonight we stopped by his house. Bård Fredrik was very hospitable, very nice. We chatted about fishing for an hour over coffee, and then went down to his workshop to see his creations and talk about the art of tying flies. It's amazing what can be done with bits of feather and thread to make something that looks oh so tasty to fish. He really does fine work, good enough to win the 2001, 2002, and 2003 world championships. (After 3 wins, you're not allowed to compete anymore!) The two fly fishers really hit it off well. Jack may be coming back in late June to join Bård Fredrik fishing for salmon and brown trout on some local rivers.

I'm not a fisherman myself, but I was fascinated and very much enjoyed being, well, a fly on the wall! A wonderful, unexpected treat!
