Potato Picking and the Nobel Peace Prize

The potato-plucking vacation starts in a few hours. Norwegian schools have a 5-day weekend in October, originally so that children could help harvest potatoes. The sunlight and warmth have returned today after so much rain, and it looks like we may enjoy sunshine for the rest of the week.

There was a lot of talk about Obama in the lunchroom last week after one of my colleagues burst in with the news that Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. People felt it was too early for the prize, but were pleased nonetheless, recognizing that his election alone has been a tremedous symbol of hope around the world. A few folks thought that his election alone has done more to make the world a better place than anything in recent memory. I suppose the internet will light up with arguments for the next week... it will be interesting to watch at least! I'm predicting, with dread, a lot of Republican negativity. Amazing that some of the most anti-American sentiment comes from within the U.S. itself!
