Starship Awesome

Maggie and her friend Fr√ły are running an elective at school called Starship Awesome. It's a 'geek culture' club where they learn about sci-fi films, physics, blowing things up, etc. They have 14 kids in grades 3-6 who are taking the elective. The elective meets 2 hours a week for 8 weeks, and they've planned out each of the classes.

I came to visit today as a guest lecturer. I told them all about the N.S.S. Starstorm, the Naylor family spaceship we built in the year 2020, the roles of each of the family members, and our first mission to Alpha Centuri, 4 light years away. (Of course we discussed time dilation and how to avoid it with wormholes).

I then drew exterior pictures of the spaceship and floor plans for the interior, and then the kids designed their own family spaceships. It was a hoot!

Pam found us a dog. She and Peter took the bus to the airport and flew to Oslo to meet the breeder. A day of adventure awaits!

Anna gets a call from Oslo. They have the dog.

They took the train back, a 7-hour trip. The dog did great. Here they are arriving at the train station on a wet snowy night.

Anna, Maggie and had made decorations to welcome the dog home on this St. Valentine's Day. The cats however weren't too welcoming.

He's a border collie/golden retriever mix, a "coltriever". He's 4 months old, well trained, very loving and a little shy. I think he'll be great.

We're looking for names! We've tried Shivas, Henry, Watson, Sherlock, Severus, Dr. Jones, Jake, Jack, Chewie, Dog and Sparta. I'm liking "Dog" more and more. Send us your suggestions!

Folks in Norway eat whale. There's a lot of whales around Norway, especially gray whales, and they are legal and eaten. I'm not sure what to think of this, whales are highly intelligent. But so are pigs. And I really like bacon.

Well, at a sushi restaurant tonight we ordered a variety plate of sushi and it came with some slices of whale meat. So I tried it. It was a lot like beef, but not particularly good. I can add it to my list of unusual things I've eaten, but I don't think I'll eat it again.

Anna's birthday

Anna's birthday! We were greeted with this scene from our window this morning. Lovely colors for a birthday morning.

Birthday person gets to pick the restaurant, Anna picked sushi, easily making for the most expensive birthday meal of the past year.

The most unusual present she got was this one from Pam:
Yep, it's a frying pan. See how pleased (confused) she is?

In the evening we watched E.T. It was a simple laid-back birthday. We'll have some kind of party for her next weekend.

Symphony open house

It snowed a lot last night. But that's no trouble for our 4-wheel drive Toyota! Hurrah! I'm loving this car.

We went to Olavshallen for the symphony orchestra's open house. Members of the orchestra were there with lots of different instruments and we got to try them all. The kids also got to direct a quartet. They could make them play fast or slow and it was hilarious.

It was good to get out and go downtown for an event. Here's pictures of all 5 of us on various instruments:
